What is the device that you connect a midi controller into and it outputs sound?

The ';device'; usual has knobs or buttons that will control the tone/pitch/style/etc.... This is a noob question I know I just don't know what its called.?.?What is the device that you connect a midi controller into and it outputs sound?
A MIDI controller makes no sound. A MIDI controller can be almost anything with a MIDI port:

a keyborad, or a drum machine, or a stand alone MIDI controller.

A stand alone MIDI controller usually looks like a keyboard with a bunch of knobs.

The ';device'; that actually makes sound can be almost anything with a MIDI port that has its own sounds:

a rack mount keyboard, a regualar keyboard a drum machine, software instruments. Etc
